Interestingly, the top 15 occupations listed above only make up 38% of the total occupations nominated during FY 2022-2023. 62% would likely consist of various occupations such as registered nurses, teachers, engineers, etc.

There is no doubt more employers are willing to sponsor candidates due to the massive skills shortage Australia is experiencing since the pandemic. Although this is very encouraging for aspiring migrants, it is worth noting that one of the pitfalls of 482 TSS visa is it is a temporary visa. Yes, there is a pathway to permanent visa after 2 years (from 25 November) but this is dependent on the employer sponsoring the candidate for the PR visa. Temporary visas holders are vulnerable to changes in the policies at any given time. Hence, it is smart to not be complacent and have a back up plan – always.

Nothing could ever replace the more assured General Skilled Migration pathway with regards to living and working in Australia on a permanent basis.  482 visa may get you to Australia quicker but your ultimate goal should be 189, 190 or even 491 visa. The best way to approach your Australian migration plan is to take matters in your control, get started with your skills assessment for GSM pathway but at the same time be on the lookout for employer sponsored jobs. If along the way, you got lucky to be sponsored, use the 482 visa as your entry ticket to Australia whilst still sorting out your GSM pathway in the background. That way, by the time you are on EOI stage, you’ll be waiting comfortably in Australia. You then have more options for your future in Australia either you get your PR visa via your employer or via your own skills…….and that’s what you call strategy!
